Top Ten 2016 Debut Novels

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about my top ten debut novels in 2016, which is such an exciting topic, but one that is difficult for me to come up with my list of ten. Unfortunately, it’s not because I have too many I love to slim down, but because I’m just awful at finding debut novels! Usually, by the time I find out about an author, they already have at least three of four books published. Maybe it’s because I tend to stick with authors I’ve heard a little about, maybe it’s because I’m not good at finding new authors, I don’t know. I’m just not that great at finding debut authors, for whatever reason. But I do have a couple for you, so let me jump right into those, and I’ll include the actual descriptions so that this post looks longer.

1. Counted with the Stars by Connilyn Cossette

Sold into slavery by her father and forsaken by the man she was supposed to marry, young Egyptian Kiya must serve a mistress who takes pleasure in her humiliation. When terrifying plagues strike Egypt, Kiya is in the middle of it all.
Choosing to flee with the Hebrews, Kiya finds herself reliant on a strange God and drawn to a man who despises her people. With everything she’s ever known swept away and now facing the trials of the desert, will she turn back toward Egypt or surrender her life and her future to Yahweh?

I love historical novels that focus on Biblical times, and this one definitely gives it a bit of a different twist! It sounds so intriguing and exciting, and I know I am super excited to pick up this one! In my opinion, this is the perfect plotline for Connilyn to pick as her debut novel, as it will truly show her talent and what she’s interested in. Even if I had a huge list of debut novels, this one would definitely still be in my top ten!

2. The Secret to Hummingbird Cake by Celeste Fletcher McHale

Southern charm, hilarity, heart-wrenching emotion, and the remarkable bond of friendship.
Carrigan, Ella Rae, and Laine have been friends since kindergarten…since the day Ella Rae beat up a boy who tried to pick on Laine. They all still live in the small town of Bon Dieu Falls, Louisiana, and they’ve been through everything together, from a State Softball Championship to Carrigan’s elopement at seventeen. And Laine is still trying to keep the other two out of trouble.
But when cancer threatens to rip the trio apart, their world spins in a way they’ve never known before. How deep do the bonds of friendship go? Through it all, they just may discover the secret to the divine taste of hummingbird cake—and the secret to a friendship that never ends.

This book sounds so wonderful!!! I cannot tell you how excited I am for it! Just based on the synopsis, I can already tell that Celeste is a wonderful writer, and I can’t wait to learn more about her writing style. I can also tell that this is going to be a tear-jerker, and since I love feel-good novels, which I know this will be, I can’t imagine not having this novel in my top ten.

Well, those are all of the debut novels I can think of. Sad, huh? But at the same time, I don’t have a complete list of all the new releases for next year that I want to read, because I haven’t had a chance to get that far and more pop up all of the time, so I may find more debut novels before next year is up. That won’t really help with this particular list, but maybe I’ll put out an updated list at the end of next year, and I’ll even tell you how much I enjoyed those that I get a chance to read before the year is up. What are some debut novels you’re looking forward to?
        Happy Tuesday!

  2. It's always a little risky to pick up a debut book, but sometimes it's totally worth it! THE SECRET TO HUMMINGBIRD CAKE, for instance, sounds like it would be. I just added it to my Goodreads TBR shelf. Thanks for the heads-up!

  4. The Secret to Hummingbird Cake sounds like one for my TBR. I am a southern girl and love books set in the south, especially books that promise some of the charm.
