Top Ten Tuesday: Series I’ve Given Up On

 

It’s Tuesday again! And I must say, I am really glad to be back to writing Top Ten Tuesday posts once more. Plus, this is a really good Tuesday for me, since I am currently laid back with my feet up enjoying a week by the lake. There is no better way to spend the summer, except by the beach. Especially since I brought enough books that I could almost read a book a day if I wanted to, and that makes for the perfect vacation. This week for Top Ten Tuesday, however, we are talking about books—or rather series—that we are actually not planning on reading. So, here are some series I have decided I just can’t finish.

My Bookshelf: The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill by Julie Klassen

On a rise overlooking the Wiltshire countryside stands the village of Ivy Hill. Its coaching inn, The Bell, is its lifeblood—along with the coach lines that stop there daily, bringing news, mail, travelers, and much-needed trade.

Top Ten Tuesday: It’s All About Family

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about our suggestions for what your book clubs should read if they like a certain type of books. I love series, so I started out thinking about doing that, but it was too broad of a topic. So, I looked deeper, and I found one of my favorite types of series—the kind that follow one family/set of siblings—and decided that I had some wonderful suggestions. Therefore, if your book club, or just you, love reading series that are all about one family, here are some books for you!

Top Ten Tuesday: Time for TV!

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about TV! It’s an open-ended theme, just so long as your topic has something to do with television, so I’m writing my post about book series I wish were also TV series! I could list so many books or series that I wish were either shows or movies, but I’ve somehow managed to narrow my list down to just ten series. Also, I would have added the all of the Baxter Family series but they’re already being turned into a TV show, and I’m so excited!! Anyway, I figured since that one’s already in the works I would mention some that aren’t but should be.

My Favorite Series

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is actually all about ten books that I feel differently about after time has passed, but that topic just didn’t resonate with me, as I usually just think of books the same way as time passes, other than the fact that my love for them grows stronger. So today, I thought I’d write about ten of my all-time favorite series. I’m a huge proponent of series—don’t get me wrong I love stand-alone novels almost as much—because I just really love getting to know a group of characters over the course of that many pages. Some of my favorite books are parts of a series, so I thought it fitting to focus on them today. I’ve only added series that I’ve finished reading, and have loved each book, so that I could narrow it down a little. Must-Have January Releases

        How is it already almost January? I cannot believe it is about to be 2016! That seems like such a crazy concept, and yet, here it is. The good thing about this transition though, is that there are so many wonderful novels I am looking forward to this year, especially in January. Here’s my list of the books that are releasing this upcoming month, I am sure you can find something there you will enjoy as there are quite a few different types of fiction represented here.

Calico Spy

        Pinkerton operative Katie Madison’s newest case takes her to Calico, Kansas, where two Harvey House restaurant waitresses were murdered in mysterious circumstances. Calico’s sheriff, Branch Whitman, has never met a Pink he liked and is stunned to learn the pretty redhead’s true identity as she works undercover as a Harvey girl. A tornado hits town, and a past deception puts Branch’s eight-year-old son in danger. Now the Sheriff has no choice but to work with Katie or chance losing everything he holds dear.

        Calico Spy is the third book in Margaret Brownley’s Undercover Ladies series, coming after Petticoat Detective and Undercover Bride. While I didn’t have the chance to read Undercover Bride, I did read Petticoat Detective, and I absolutely loved it. Margaret does a wonderful job of weaving together mystery and romance in a way that is intriguing and unforgettable, and this novel sounds like it would be no exception. I cannot wait to hopefully have the chance to get lost between the pages of such a captivating-sounding mystery!

Beyond the Silence

        Lillian Porter has always wanted to fulfill her mother’s dream of going west, so when she hears about a nanny position in Angels Camp, California, she defies her grandfather and takes a chance on a new future. But she quickly wonders if she made the right choice. There are rumors in town that her new employer, Woodward Colton, caused the death of his wife. This accusation doesn’t match the man Lillian comes to know—and Mrs. Goodman, Woody’s long-time housekeeper, is decisively on Woody’s side—but many in town stay far away from Lillian because of her association with the Colton family.

        Lillian’s six-year-old charge, Jimmy, was there when his mother died, and he hasn’t spoken a word since. Gently, Lillian tries to coax him out of his shell, hoping he’ll one day feel safe enough to tell her the truth about what happened. But the Colton olive farm is no longer a safe place. Lillian encounters suspicious characters on their land and mysterious damage done to the farm. Will Mrs. Goodman and Jimmy be able to speak what they know in time to save Lillian from tragedy?

        Although I have read quite a few books by Tracie Peterson, I have yet to read anything by Kimberly Woodhouse, so I am excited to be able to dive right into this novel that they wrote together. Beyond the Silence seems like such a deep, mysterious, heartwarming story that I am so sure I am going to love, so I am extremely glad that I will be receiving a copy as soon as it can finally get here. I am hopeful that it will be just as amazing as it sounds, and that I will be able to post my review of it someday this month!

Thin Ice

        After losing her parents in a car accident and her sister to a house fire, Christy Reed has been mired in grief. Life is finally starting to feel normal again when an envelope arrives in the mail—addressed in her sister’s handwriting. And the note inside claims she is still alive.

        FBI Special Agent Lance McGregor, a former Delta Force operator, is assigned to reopen the case, but he’s coming up with more questions than answers. If Ginny Reed is still alive—who is the woman buried in her grave? Where is Ginny? And is Christy a pawn in a twisted cat-and-mouse game—or the target of a sinister plot? As he digs deeper, one thing becomes clear: whoever is behind the bizarre ruse has a deadly agenda.

        Thin Ice is the second book in Irene Hannon’s Men of Valor series, coming after Buried Secrets. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to read Buried Secrets, so I cannot accurately tell you what all these novels hold, but I have heard wonderful things about both the stories and Irene Hannon, so I am hopeful that Thin Ice will be an interesting read. It definitely sounds captivating!

Undaunted Hope

        Tessa Taylor arrives in 1870s Upper Peninsula, Michigan, planning to serve as a new teacher to the town. Much to her dismay, however, she immediately learns that there was a mistake, that the town had requested a male teacher. Percival Updegraff, superintendent and chief mine clerk, says she can stay through winter since they won’t be able to locate a new teacher before then, and Tessa can’t help but say she is  in his debt. Little does she know that Percival will indeed keep track of all that she owes him.

        Determined to become indispensable, Tessa throws herself into teaching, and soon the children of the widowed lighthouse keeper have decided she’s the right match for their grieving father. Their uncle and assistant light keeper, Alex Bjorklund, has his own feelings for Tessa. As the two brothers begin competing for her hand, Tessa increasingly feels that someone is tracking her every move, and she may not be able to escape the trap that has been laid for her.

        Undaunted Hope is the third book in Jody Hedlund’s Beacons of Hope series, coming after Love Unexpected and Hearts Made Whole. I absolutely loved both of the previous novels in the series, so I just know that I will really enjoy the final installment as well. It sounds as if it will be the perfect conclusion to the story, and I’m so excited to see what happens to Tessa, who I met earlier in Hearts Made Whole.

A Worthy Heart

Can an Irish lass with a dream for America find true love?

        Maggie Montgomery’s long-held wish to see America is finally coming true. She’ll visit her beloved brother Rylan and his wife, Colleen, and at the same time, escape Neill Fitzgerald’s unwanted attention. In addition, Maggie has a secret! She plans to remain in America to seek her fortune and to hopefully find love. While visiting Irish Meadows, she meets an intriguing man whom she thinks is a stable hand. Only when Rylan demands she stay away from Adam O’Leary does she realize he’s Colleen’s brother, recently released from prison. Nonetheless, Maggie can’t seem to make her heart conform to her brother’s request.

        Adam O’Leary has never felt worthy of his place in the family. Spending time in jail only reinforces his belief. Now that he’s free, Adam hopes to make amends and earn back his family’s trust. Falling in love with Maggie Montgomery, however, was never in his plans.

        Despite everyone’s effort to keep them apart, the two develop a bond nothing can break—but has Adam truly changed, or will the sins of his past prove too much for Maggie to overcome?

        A Worthy Heart is the second book in Susan Anne Mason’s Courage to Dream series, coming after Irish Meadows. I really, really enjoyed Irish Meadows, and I absolutely cannot wait to get to read Adam’s story. He seemed like such a tough, bad-boy-type guy when I met him in the first novel, and I am excited to see how he really is, and how he redeems himself throughout the story. Bad guys who redeem themselves are literally the best, so I am super pumped to watch Adam go through that process.

Mermaid Moon

Audra’s father uttered his last words in a phone call: “Come home to Mermaid Beach.” Now she’s back—determined to find the truth.

        Audra Davis believes her father was murdered. Her childhood sweetheart Kevin O’Connor, game warden of Mermaid Beach, is also suspicious of the accident—but he’s equally determined to keep Audra at arm’s length. She broke his heart years ago when she left without a word. He’s not about to lower his guard and let her get close again. He has his daughter Faith to think about. With his track record, he doesn’t think any woman will stay in down-east Maine’s remote windswept coast.

        Hoping to discover what happened to her father, Audra takes over his mail boat duties, guiding his trusted boat on deliveries to see what she can uncover. Soon she finds letters from her birth mother—letters postmarked but never delivered. How could her father have kept them from her all this time? Do they have anything to do with his murder?

        In spite of his doubts, Kevin thinks Audra might be right about her father’s death. As the only law enforcement officer in the area, he has a duty to help her track down the killer. Spending so much time together begins to rekindle the torch he’s carried for her all these years, but he still sees the guilt in her eyes that drove her away in the first place, guilt over choosing to spend time with him the fateful night her mother dies instead of fueling her mother’s boat. Can Kevin and Audra navigate their way to each other before a murderer rips them apart forever?

        Mermaid Moon is the second book in Colleen Coble’s Sunset Cove series, coming after The Inn at Ocean’s Edge. I really LOVED every single second of The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, so I cannot WAIT to open up Mermaid Moon. Fortunately, I was blessed with the wonderful opportunity to be an influencer for it, so I already have my copy that I will start just as soon as I get the chance. Look out for my review, because it’s coming soon and it’s going to be full of reasons why Colleen is an amazing author.

Keeper of the Stars

She blames him for her brother’s death. Can she let go of resentment and open her heart to love?

        Penny Cartwright found it difficult to understand why her younger brother would choose to join a country singer’s band rather than return to Kings Meadow after college…and the separation strained their relationship. Then a car accident made certain her brother could never return.

        Keeper of the Stars is the third book in Robin Lee Hatcher’s Kings Meadow Romance series, coming after Love Without End and Whenever You Come Around. I absolutely LOVED Whenever You Come Around, and I really enjoyed Love Without End as well, so I am almost certain I will love Keeper of the Stars as well. It sounds like the perfect story, full of heartbreak and redemption, forgiveness and love, and I absolutely cannot wait to read it! Good thing I am also receiving a copy of this one!

A Son’s Vow

        Three months ago, everything changed for Darla Kurtz and her family. Darla’s father was responsible for a terrible fire at the Charm’s lumber mill which killed five Amish men. And though he, too, lost his life, the town of Charm hasn’t looked at her family the same since. Even Lukas Kinsinger—with whom Darla used to have a close relationship.

        Now her brother’s anger at the town is spilling over onto Darla, and she has the bruises to prove it. The accident already cost five lives, but if something doesn’t change soon, Darla fears it will cost her—and her family—even more.

        Lukas Kinsinger wants to mourn the loss of his father, but he can hardly find time to breathe. Suddenly the head of his father’s lumber mill and responsible for taking care of his three siblings, he’s feeling the pressure. He has also never felt more alone—especially with the new tension between he and Darla. But when he learns of her troubles at home, Lukas knows he can’t simply stand by and watch.         As Lukas and Darla attempt to repair their families, they discover something deeper than friendship growing between them. But will Lukas and Darla’s love be accepted after so much loss? Or will the pain of the past overcome any chance of future happiness?

        A Son’s Vow is the first book in Shelley Shepard Gray’s The Charmed Amish Life series, but is definitely not the first book I have read by her. Although I enjoyed her historical mysteries quite a bit more than her Amish novels, I do like them, and am looking forward to diving into this one. And guess what, I’m getting this one as well, so I will be sure to read it quickly so that I can let you know how wonderful it is!

My Bookshelf: Joline’s Redemption by Vickie McDonough

Joline has fallen as far as any women can.

        Jo’s lofty dreams of love and luxury evaporated when her ne’er-do-well husband left her pregnant and alone. After a series of increasingly bad decisions, Jo finds herself at a crossroads: swallow her pride and seek refuge at her sister’s home or risk losing her infant son.

        She chooses the first option, even though she knows the man she’s running from will come after her, and she needs to move farther away. To earn money for the journey, she goes to work for her estranged husband’s brother, Baron. But Jo has a long list of secrets she’s keeping from Baron—namely her son, Jamie.

        Jo intrigues Baron, and he finds himself falling in love with her. But when he discovers she’s his brother’s castoff, he closes his heart. Baron has been cleaning up his younger brother’s messes most of his life, and Jo is one mess he refuses to tackle.

        All too soon, Jo’s past catches up with her, and she realizes the disaster she’s made of her life. Is it possible that God can redeem a woman who has fallen as far as she has and give her hope and peace for a happy future?

        Joline’s Redemption is the second book in Vickie McDonough’s Land Rush Dreams series, coming after Gabriel’s Atonement. Although I really enjoyed Gabriel’s Atonement, I have to say I loved Joline’s Redemption all that much more. I got a taste of Joline’s story mixed into Gabriel and Lara’s—obviously since Joline is Lara’s sister she was mentioned, but part of the drama of her story was perfectly set up in Gabriel’s Atonement—and I knew immediately that I would enjoy reading about how her life ended up playing out. As I began reading Joline’s Redemption, I realized I was right to anticipate her story, and I was hooked by almost the first page.

        Joline is definitely a relatable, loveable character. Although she wasn’t my favorite in the previous book, simply because she had one nasty attitude when it came to her older sister Lara, she is definitely a character worth loving in her own novel. Despite her past mistakes, she only longs to make life better for herself and her son, Jamie, and therefore strives to turn her life around and come back from her past. What makes her the most relatable, however, is the fact that she continually berates herself for the bad decisions she once made. Though that is not something we as people should do since God forgives and forgets as soon as we ask, it is such an easy habit for us to fall into. Anyway, I really loved Jo, and I also loved the way she and Baron interacted, even before she decided not to be afraid of him.

        Baron is such a polar opposite from his brother! I’ll let you figure that one out for yourself, but let me just say, if they didn’t look alike and I wasn’t clearly told by Vickie in the book that they were brothers, I would never have believed it. Baron is such a wonderful, upstanding man who would never do anything to hurt anyone, which makes him completely different from his brother but absolutely perfect in his own right. The only thing I didn’t like about him was the fact that he initially saw Jo as one of his brother’s messes. That is the last thing that she is, even though she does have a bit of a past and it is pretty much his fault, Jo is not anyone’s “mess”. Baron made a mistake in viewing her that way, and his impatience at having to deal with his brother’s messes doesn’t give him any more right to do so. All in all though, Baron really is a great guy, and you truly get to see that as the book comes to an end.

        Because this was such an intriguing book, with romance, suspense, and even a little bit of mystery, I happily give it all five bookshelves. I really, really loved the ending, and the whole story really, and am so glad I own a copy so that I can read it again soon. And I cannot wait for the final book in the series, Sarah’s Surrender, which releases sometime next year! I highly recommend this novel!

My Bookshelf: Gabriel’s Atonement by Vickie McDonough

        All Gabriel Coulter ever wanted was to live a comfortable life as a successful gambler, but a confrontation with a disgruntled cowboy who’d just lost to Gabe leads to a family man dying in his arms. Even though it was self-defense, the only way Gabe knows to get rid of his guilt is to return the money he won to the man’s wife. Lara Talbot sees Gabe as a derelict like her husband and wants nothing to do with him. But as she struggles to provide for her family and makes plans to claim property in the upcoming Oklahoma land rush, she wonders if God might have sent the meddling gambler to help.

        Gabriel’s Atonement is the first book in Vickie McDonough’s Land Rush Dreams series, and is also the first full length book I have ever read by her. I have, however, read one of her novella collections in the past, so I knew a little about her writing style going in. in all honesty, though, I didn’t expect that I would love this book nearly as much as I did. The synopsis sounded interesting, don’t get me wrong, it’s just that I have been able to read so many wonderfully written books over the last few months, so I’m never sure just what to expect any more when I pick up a novel. Gabriel’s Atonement is such a sweet, captivating romance with just enough mystery and intrigue to make it extremely difficult to put down.

        Lara Talbot is such a strong character! I cannot imagine having to care for my son, sister, ailing grandfather, and farm all on my own, and definitely not in that day and age, but Lara does, and does well. Even though her late husband was a no-account and they are strapped financially, Lara really does an amazing job of taking care of her family, especially considering the fact that she pretty much did it all without much help since her grandfather was ill so often. She is also a wonderful mother to Michael, and is just an all-around easy to relate to character, especially when it comes to how she treats Gabe in the beginning.

        Gabriel Coulter is such a character! Despite his somewhat unsavory past and occupation, he truly is a wonderfully kind, caring, and compassionate man, and as he grows throughout the course of the story he really does become a man worthy of admiration. I don’t want to give away anything, but Gabe definitely is one of my favorite heroes based on all that he becomes. And even just through the transition. His heart is one of gold, once he allows himself to use it of course.

        Gabriel’s Atonement is such a wonderful book, with plenty of romance, action, and just enough intrigue to keep you captivated until the last page. You’ll even be captivated after that as it pretty much sets you up for the next book in the series—Joline’s Redemption—which I’ve already finished and loved as well (I’ll be reviewing it tomorrow). The only flaw I found with this book is one simple part of the ending, I just don’t want to describe it too much because I don’t want to spoil the book for you. Let me just leave it at this: there’s an argument between certain people because of a certain circumstance, and I felt like it was resolved and went back to “happily ever after” a little too quickly and easily for my tastes. Of course, I still loved the ending, it just felt a little too unrealistic for me, which leads me to the decision that I must give this novel four and a half bookshelves instead of all five. However, since most review sites don’t allow you to give books half stars, but only wholes, I will round up to five because I loved this book enough to round up instead of down. Outside of that one teensy-tiny flaw, this was a wonderful book that comes highly recommended from me.

Top Ten Tuesday: Finished Series I Have Yet to Finish

        This week's topic is series we have yet to finish. Although it was difficult to narrow my list down to ten, I did it. Here they are!

The Unexpected Brides series by Melissa Jagears

        Although I have read the first two books in this series—A Bride for Keeps and A Bride in Store—and loved both of them, I have yet to pick up the third novel. Granted, it did only just come out a few months ago, but I have been dying to read it so it is fairly odd that I haven’t read it yet. Only there is a perfectly good—or bad depending on how you look at it—reason for that, I have been busy with life and the other books I have been reading for this blog. Fortunately, I am planning on reading A Bride at Last next month. Hopefully that will actually be accomplished.

The Gregory Sisters series by Lorna Seilstad

        This is another series that I have almost finished, but not quite. I have read When Love Calls and While Love Stirs, just not As Love Blooms. Since I really enjoyed the first two books of the series, I really should have read As Love Blooms by now. Once again, this blog keeps getting in the way (wink wink)! But I’m planning on reading it next month as well, so hopefully this series will be finished soon.

Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy by Kim Vogel Sawyer

        Despite my fear of sounding redundant, that is also the story with this series. I have finished both When Mercy Rains and When Grace Sings, but I have yet to pick up When Love Returns, though I have been dying to do so. I really, really loved this series, so I know I will finish it eventually, but so far as I know, the library doesn’t even have the third book yet. We’ll see if they do by November.

Texas Dreams series by Amanda Cabot

        I first started this series ages ago, when I got the first book—Paper Roses—for free on my nook, and I loved it. So I rushed to the library and borrowed the second novel—Scattered Petals—and absolutely loved that one as well. Why I have yet to finally read the third book is a mystery to be, but it is a problem that seriously needs to be fixed. If I loved the first two as much as I did, it’s logical to expect that I would enjoy Tomorrow’s Garden as well. Obviously I need to put it a little bit higher on my TBR list.

Wings of the Nightingale series by Sarah Sundin

        Just recently I read the first book in this series—With Every Letter—and I loved it so, so much. I got it for free on my nook and thought I would give it a try, and I absolutely fell for Sarah’s ‘World War’ themed romance novels. But, because I already had everything I was reading for the rest of the month planned out, I didn’t get around to reading the rest of the series, and even know I don’t even have it listed on my TBR blog list. Obviously there is something wrong with that picture.

Secrets of Crittenden County series by Shelley Shepard Gray

        Although I technically have finished this series—I read all three main books—I have yet to actually put this series to rest. You see, there are three books—Missing, The Search, and Found—but there is also a Christmas novel that was written to come after the three of them. I haven’t read the Christmas novel—Peace—yet, even though I absolutely loved this series. Why? Because my library refuses to carry it. And I much prefer having whole the whole series rather than just the last book, so I am reluctant to actually buy it for fear I will end up buying all of them even though I don’t have the funds to do so at the moment. So for now, this series will have to remain unfinished.

Weddings by Bella series by Janice Thompson

        Okay, it is not my fault that I haven’t finished this series yet. I loved, loved, loved these books, but I thought there were only three! I read Fools Rush In, Swinging on a Star, and It Had to Be You a couple of years ago, but until recently I had no idea there was a fourth book! And once again, I cannot find That’s Amore anywhere in my library. I am severely tempted to purchase these as well, but we shall see. Someway, somehow, I will finish this series, though.

A Katie Parker Production series by Jenny B. Jones

       I know, I know, I sound repetitive again, but I really didn’t know that Jenny was going to add a fourth book to this series! I absolutely loved In Between, On the Loose, and The Big Picture, so I know I would enjoy Can’t Let You Go as well. I just didn’t know that book existed until recently! I’ll get to it eventually, though. I wonder if my library has it…

September 11 series by Karen Kingsbury

        Unlike all the others, I do know why I haven’t finished this series. Although I love Karen Kingsbury and typically read anything she has written just because she wrote it, I doubt I will ever finish this series. Don’t worry, it isn’t because they aren’t good books. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed One Tuesday Morning. I just cannot bear to read it again, or read the ones that come after it, because they are just too sad and I don’t enjoy crying that much. Otherwise, this series wouldn’t even be on this list. But my compassionate heart makes it impossible for me to even consider finishing this series.

Southern Discomfort series by Tamara Leigh

        Last but not least is another series that I cannot wait to finish. Then why haven’t I, you ask? Honestly, I’m not exactly sure. Oh yes, I remember, because my TBR list is far too long! I read Leaving Carolina about a year ago when it was lent to me by a friend, and I fell in love with Tamara’s writing but then things came up and I got busy with my blog, and the rest of the series fell by the wayside. Hopefully I’ll get to it soon.
